How to Select the Best Lawn Mower
For starters, you have to know what your expectations are for the lawn mower that you want to pick. That should narrow your long shopping list. I’ve narrowed down the many things you need to look to 2 main points:
1) Types of Lawn Mowers
2) Features of Lawn Mowers
Types of Lawn Mowers
Lawn mowers are divided into two basic kinds: reel mowers and rotary mowers. From the rotary mowers, there are rotary non self-propelled mowers and self-propelled mowers.
Reel Mower
Reel-type lawn mowers are pushed forward either by muscle or by engine power. They can cut lawns shorter than rotary mowers due to the shearing action of the reel blades against the bed knife (stationary bar which is parallel to the ground).

Reel Mower
Mostly used on golf courses, reel mowers leave clean cuts and finer grass clippings than ordinary rotary mowers. Nevertheless, their cutting is not as fine as mulching rotary mowers.
One such example of a reel mower is the Scotts Green Classic 2000-20.
Lightest and least expensive, reel mower is best for those with small lawns. Also, the environmentally friendly user might take a liking towards these types of mowers.
The most critical part is to keep the reel properly adjusted. The bed knife cannot be too close or too far away from the rotating blades. So, remember to take time now and again to check the screw and bolt in order to adjust the reel properly.
Rotary Mower
Rotary mowers are powered by an engine to turn the flat, horizontal blade. The non-traditional mulching mowers are more popular because they leave clippings on the lawn.
The problem now is that there are too many models and varieties to choose from. The best way is to look at your options, at your yard and at the options of mowers once more.
Ease of usage on long grasses and easier to maintain, they are one of the determining factors for many busy users these days. The blades are easy to remove, sharpen or replace. However, this type of mower does not mow as cleanly and evenly as reel mowers.
(A) Rotary Non-Self-Propelled Mower
This is also called rotary push mowers. Good for smooth and flat medium size lawns, they are the most common type of mowers around.
Look at the features first that you are likely to need to help you determine what kind of mower you would need. Just as important would be to confirm the biggest engine that your financial standing can afford because bigger engines will have more power to cut through denser material
(B) Rotary Self-Propelled Rotary Power Mowers
This type of mower has the power to pull themselves up on the slopes without much difficulty. If you have uneven lawns, pick the model which is equipped with large rear wheels.

Rotary Self-Propelled Mower
It is VERY important to pick this type of mower with a powerful enough engine to cut through the grass and to propel the upwards inclination. Additionally, remember to check the speed settings before purchasing, preferably not too fast or not too slow.

Riding Lawn Mower

Riding Mower
As a popular alternative, a riding lawn mower might be your answer if you prefer to laze around a bit but have a large lawn. It provides a seat and controls on the mower. Furthermore, it is equipped with many different devices and can cut grasses into smaller pieces. Some types of riding lawn mower are also designed with twin blades to help create mulch.

Zero-turn-radius Mower
For lawns which require high maintenance, the riding mowers are similar to the ones landscapers use. They usually come with a rear- engine and rear steering wheel which highlights one of its biggest advantages, namely maneuverability. The two rear wheels can be individually powered using the twin steering levers.
However, this type of mowers can lose traction and may be difficult to control on hills unless you had ample practice time. Similarly, if your lawn contains numerous obstacles, a four-wheel steer tractor might be more suitable.
Features of Lawn Mowers
1) Reliability & Durability
2) Efficiency
3) Type of garden
4) Size of garden
5) Obstacles
6) Low Maintenance
7) Convenience
8 ) Budget
With these 8 facts, you should be able to pin point the exact use that you need in a lawn mower. Then, your shopping load for the best lawn mower for you will be so much easier
1) Reliability & Durability
Lawn tractors have the horsepower to drag heavier things and are equipped with stump pulling capabilities.
They are suitable for those who spend a lot of time on their garden.
2) Efficiency
The bigger the lawnmower, the bigger the blade will be. This in turn affects how fast and efficient your lawn mower cuts your grass.
There is less physical assertion (easy on the arms, back and legs in the long run!) involved when using self-propelled mower.
A word of caution: take note that higher horsepower doesn’t necessarily mean higher quality mowing to avoid purchasing wrongly!
3) Type of garden
This will help you choose what type of lawnmower to buy.
For a smooth garden, any mower deck will do.
A self-propelled lawnmower with a mowing deck which has floating wheels to prevent scalping areas is ideal for an uneven lawn. One such example would be Lawn-Boy 10795 Insight Platinum.
4) Size of garden
A riding mower would be advisable if you have a lawn of more than ¾ of an acre in size.
A push reel mower will be preferable for smaller yards.
If you have a very large area to mow, do consider investing in commercial lawn mower. A good one would be the Craftsman Commercial Cutting Width Zero-Turn Lawn Mower. They might be more expensive but they mow regularly and faster than common lawn mowers.
5) Obstacles
If you have a lot of trees or your lawn is tightly designed, you might want to consider buying a riding lawnmower with a narrow mowing deck (e.g. 32 inches).
If the trees drop a lot of leaves in the fall, a riding lawnmower that has an optional attachment to catch and collect lawn clippings and leaves would be preferable.
Mulching mowers cut up the clippings so finely that they are absorbed back into the lawn easily for greater nutrients to the lawn.
6) Low Maintenance
Don’t be fooled! All lawn mowers need maintenance but some need less maintenance and are better suited for those with limited mechanical abilities!
Check whether you are comfortable with cleaning the air filter, changing the oil and checking spark plugs. If you are, your lawn mower can last you for a long time.
7) Convenience
Riding lawn mowers are designed to save you time because the blades on the undercarriage cut your grass for you without much effort!
Some mowers are designed so that when you stop the blades, the engine keep on running until you off it so that you don’t have to choke start it again. If you like this feature, then Toro Recycler 20333 is good.
8 ) Budget
Push mowers are generally cheaper and tend to break down less. This translates to less maintenance costs as well.
How much can you afford to pay for the lawnmower and how long would you need to use it can aid you in determining the price range and quality of the lawnmower that is best for you.
